How To Clean Your Hot Tub In 5 Easy Steps

In-ground hot tub installation surrounded by stone masonry walls.

Spending some time in your hot tub is the perfect ending to a long and tiring day. That’s only possible if your tub is clean and ready to use. Nobody wants to soak in a hot tub that has foamy, milky, or cloudy-looking water.

Those are some clear-cut signs that your hot tub is dirty and needs to be cleaned as soon as possible to ensure a safe and enjoyable hot tub experience.

Keeping your hot tub clean and operational isn’t as tough as some might think.

In fact, we’ve come up with a list of five easy steps to get the job done in no time at all!

1. Flush the Lines

The bacteria and the mold that grows in the tubes and inner structures of the tub can be removed by flushing lines with a cleaner, such as a line flush. You can find this product at your local hot tub store, including Backyards In Style. We have line flush products along with many other spa cleaning supplies for sale.

The application of the product depends on the type you purchase, but generally, it should be added to the tub while in operation. Built-up lines can decrease the overall efficiency of a hot tub, which is why they should be flushed during each time you drain and completely clean your hot tub.

2. Drain the Tank

Now that you’re ready to drain the hot tub, be sure to cut the water and power. Doing this helps to keep the pump motor from breaking or short-circuiting due to the strain it receives by pumping less water.

After you’ve cut the power, drain your tub depending on the draining instructions that came up with your hot tub model. Certain manufacturers prefer to leave some water in the foot well. However, if you see a cloudy discharge as you flush lines, drain the tub completely.

You should aim to flush the lines, drain the tank and completely clean your hot tub three to four times a year.

3. Clean the Spa

It’s time to do a deep cleaning of your hot tub. We highly recommend that you only use products from a local hot tub store. Avoid the use of household or automotive cleaners, as they can cause great damage to your spa.

Once you have the cleaner, spray a thin film of water on the surface of the tub and apply the cleaner gently with a sponge or a rag. Gently scrub the entire tank with this solution, focusing on the ring where the water line was.

4. Clean the Filters

Cleaning the filters of your hot tub is crucial to the life of its pump motor and also for having cleaner water in the tub.

After removing the filters by following the instructions stated in your hot tub’s manual, simply spray them with a jet of water to remove any build-up. For a deeper cleaning, soak them in a solution of filter cleaner and water.

Whatever you do, do not put your filter in the dishwasher! This is a common mistake that can cause great damage to your filters and affect the quality of your spa water.

While your filters are soaking, take this time to scrub and rinse the inside of the filter cabinets.

5. Re-Fill the Tank

After you clean the tub and the filters, thoroughly rinse each part and dry them properly.

When they are completely dried, re-fill the main compartment with clean water, add products to keep the freshwater clean and sanitary, and then connect it to the power supply for use.
