Green Hot Tub Water - Causes And Tips On How To Deal With It

Who doesn’t love green? From green grass and trees to leafy foliage, we all love to have a lush green backyard. Where you definitely do not want to see the color green, however, is in your hot tub.

Green hot tub water is a very visible sign that something is wrong, either with your water or the hot tub itself.

Let’s take a look at the two most likely problems and how to deal with them!

Causes of Green Hot Tub Water

1. Green and Slimy

If your spa’s water is green and its sides are slimy, you have an algae problem. A sanitizer like chlorine or bromine and shock are your best weapons against algae. Test your water to determine how much you need to add and, after your water is treated, thoroughly clean the filter.

Shock really is the key ingredient when dealing with algae because it keeps chlorine or bromine sanitizers working properly while preventing the buildup of organic matter and bacteria.

2. Green, No Slime

If your spa is lacking in slime, minerals such as copper or manganese are the likely cause of the green hue. Even though the cause of the problem is different, the treatment is the same: add chlorine and shock and give the filter a thorough cleaning.

What Causes Algae?

Sunlight is a huge factor when it comes to algae growth, especially in moist places. The best way to prevent algae from forming is to keep your spa covered when it’s not in use. The right hot tub cover can make that both convenient and easy.

A cover alone is not enough, however.  Without a strict maintenance schedule to keep the water’s pH levels even, algae can even appear on the walls of a covered spa.

Together, a good quality cover and a weekly cleaning schedule should keep algae issues at bay.

If you religiously cover your spa and balance and shock your water, but algae remains an issue, you may be using the wrong configuration of chemicals.

The best fix for this type of problem is to take a sample of your spa’s water to your local hot tub expert for an assessment. Your dealer will then be able to tell you how to best balance your water.

Hot Tub Upkeep

If you’re new to hot tub ownership or need a bit of a refresher, these simple steps will help to keep you on track:

  • Implementing a regular cleaning schedule.
  • Using the right chemicals in the proper amounts to treat the water.
  • Rinsing and replacing the filter as needed.
  • Draining and cleaning your tub once every quarter.

Keeping your hot tub in tip-top shape not only makes it easier to enjoy it to the fullest, it extends your spa’s lifespan.
